IGP Promotes Over 12,000 Officers, Clears 10-Year Promotion Backlog
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has approved the promotion of 12,802 police officers between January and the first week of February 2026, effectively clearing a promotion backlog that had persisted for nearly a decade.
The large-scale promotion exercise covers ranks from Lance Corporal to Chief Inspector and was confirmed by the IGP’s Secretariat.
According to the Secretariat, the promotions were largely administrative and included special recommendations carried out in accordance with the Police Service Regulations, 2012 (C.I. 76).
“All unit, district, divisional, and regional commanders across the country’s 25 police regions were directed to submit the names of officers due for promotion,” the Secretariat stated.
Out of the total number, approximately 11,900 officers in the lower ranks were elevated by one rank after exceeding the mandatory four-year period in their current positions. An additional 600 officers were promoted based on special recommendations.
The promotion exercise comes amid reports alleging nepotism in the recent promotions. However, the Secretariat has strongly denied the claims, insisting that all procedures were followed in strict adherence to due process.
Officials emphasized that the process was transparent and in line with established service regulations.
The Secretariat disclosed that several petitions were received from officers who cited unfair treatment or prolonged delays in promotion.
Some cases involved officers who had been placed on interdiction for more than five years but were later acquitted and discharged. Following administrative reviews, the Police Administration granted the affected officers their deserved promotions.
In addition, families of officers who died in the line of duty petitioned the Service, resulting in posthumous promotions for the deceased personnel.
The mass promotion is seen as a significant administrative move aimed at boosting morale within the Ghana Police Service while correcting longstanding delays in career progression.
