Health Minister: 7,000 Nurses Placed on Payroll, Migration Ongoing
Ghana's Minister for Health, Hon. Mintah Akandoh

Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has revealed that 7,000 nurses have been successfully placed on the national payroll, with efforts underway to migrate the remaining nurses.

The minister made this disclosure on Thursday during an unannounced visit to the Bibiani Government Hospital in the Western North Region. He explained that although 15,000 clearances were issued in 2024, only about 13,500 nurses were recruited. Of this number, around 10,000 have been captured on the payroll, with 7,000 currently receiving monthly salaries while the remaining 3,000 are being gradually migrated.

Akandoh clarified that the delay stemmed from the late commencement of the clearance process, as well as a directive issued after December 7, 2024, requiring newly recruited workers to go home. However, he said President Akufo-Addo made an exception for the health sector, allowing nurses to continue working despite the directive.

On reports that some doctors had not received salaries for eight months, the minister said he would need to investigate before making further comments.
