Local Languages Made Compulsory in All Basic Schools - Haruna Iddrisu

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has made an announcement. All basic schools in Ghana must teach in local languages. He said this policy is part of the government's bigger plan. The plan aims to improve teaching and learning at the basic level.

Mr. Iddrisu gave the directive on Friday. - This happened when President John Dramani Mahama launched the Free Tertiary Education for Persons with Disability initiative.

He noted that the President had stressed the importance of refocusing attention on basic education to improve early learning.

Sharing an example to illustrate the issue, he recounted: “Mr. The story is about a young girl. Her teacher in the Ashanti Region started teaching her in English early on. The child then told the teacher, ‘please speak a little Twi so that I can understand you.’”

The Minister spoke to the Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES). The Minister asked him to follow the directive in all schools. “A Ghanaian child was not born into an English home but a proud Ashanti Akan family and deserves to learn in that language. This forms part of President Mahama’s Reset Agenda,” he emphasized.

Mr. Iddrisu said that President Mahama is keeping a big campaign promise. He cares about helping vulnerable citizens. He is committed to this through the Free Tertiary Education for Persons with Disability initiative. He explained that the program aims to promote inclusivity. It shows that having a disability does not mean you cannot do things.

He also announced that the project is funded by the state and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund). It will cost about GHS31 million. He also shared the President’s promise. As long as he is in office, GETFund will give GHS50 million every two years until 2028. This money will support education for people with disabilities.

Mr. Iddrisu confirmed President Mahama’s promise to improve access to quality education. During a recent trip to China, President Xi Jinping gave Ghana a grant. The grant is worth 200 million Chinese Yuan Renminbi. This amount is about $30 million.

President Mahama has ordered a $30 million grant. This money will be used for a Science University in Damongo. This city is the capital of the Savannah Region. The Minister said that two more technical universities will be set up. One will be in Jasikan in the Oti Region. The other will be in Techiman in the Bono East Region. This shows the important role of the church and other partners in helping education grow.
