GTEC Raises Alarm Over Certificates From 80 Unrecognised Schools
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has issued a strong warning to the public over dozens of tertiary institutions operating without official recognition in the country.
According to the Commission, about 80 institutions currently do not have approval or accreditation from GTEC, raising concerns about the quality and credibility of the certificates they issue.
In an official statement released on Thursday, June 25, 2026, the Commission advised students, parents, employers and the general public to carefully verify the accreditation status of any institution before enrolling in academic programmes or accepting qualifications for employment purposes.
GTEC explained that the listed institutions failed to meet certain quality assurance standards required for tertiary education operations in Ghana.
“The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission wishes to inform the public that the institutions listed below are currently not recognised by the Commission due to various quality assurance concerns,” part of the statement noted.
The Commission further cautioned that certificates issued by such institutions may not receive official recognition, potentially affecting graduates seeking employment opportunities or further education.
Education analysts believe the warning forms part of broader efforts to protect students from investing time and money into programmes that may not be nationally recognised.
GTEC therefore encouraged prospective students to conduct proper background checks and confirm the accreditation status of schools through official channels before making admission decisions.
