GTEC Suspends Institutional Registration Applications in Ghana

GTEC Suspends Institutional Registration Applications in Ghana
The DG of GTEC, Prof Ahmed Jinapor A.

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has announced a temporary freeze on the processing of new applications for Institutional Registration.

The directive, contained in a public notice dated Friday, April 17, 2026, is part of efforts to improve regulatory oversight and enhance quality assurance standards within the tertiary education system. GTEC said the review is intended to update existing frameworks in line with modern trends and best practices.

During the suspension period, persons or organisations planning to establish tertiary institutions in Ghana have been advised to use the Institutional Accreditation route instead of the Institutional Registration process.

The Commission noted that institutions already accredited under the existing Institutional Registration framework will not be affected by the decision and may continue operations under their approved terms and conditions.

GTEC added that the temporary measure is aimed at safeguarding standards and strengthening confidence in Ghana’s higher education sector, while thanking stakeholders for their cooperation.
