Ghana’s New Minimum Wage to Be Announced Next Week
Discussions about Ghana's new daily minimum wage are expected to finish next week. This information comes from sources in the National Tripartite Committee.
Labour unions on the committee are pushing for a raise of more than ten percent. However, government and employer representatives are being careful. They point to the country’s ongoing International Monetary Fund (IMF) program and current economic problems.
Thomas Tanko Musah is the General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT). He said that the talks are going well. He added that a final decision will be announced soon.
“The rule is that outcomes are communicated only after decisions are made. What we have now are proposals that could change, so let’s all hold on to our figures,” Mr. Musah told reporters in Accra.
The President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) is Angel Carbonu. He said that the new minimum wage will begin discussions about public sector salaries.
“The minimum wage will be announced soon, after which discussions on the base pay will commence,” Mr. Carbonu stated.
The upcoming announcement will be important for setting the 2026 base pay for public sector workers. The committee aims to balance workers' hopes with the country's economic situation.
