Missile Attack on UN Base in Lebanon Leaves Two Ghanaian Soldiers Critically Wounded

On Friday, March 6, 2026, the Ghanaian Battalion Headquarters (GHANBATT) serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) came under missile attack in southern Lebanon.

According to an official statement from the Ghana Armed Forces, the base was struck by two missiles between 17:45 and 17:52 local time amid intense ongoing exchanges of fire between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Hezbollah militants in the region. This incident highlights the persistent dangers faced by UN peacekeepers in one of the world's most volatile border areas.

The attack resulted in two Ghanaian soldiers sustaining critical injuries, while a third suffered psychological trauma. The Officers’ Mess facility at the headquarters was directly hit and completely burnt down. The injured personnel are currently receiving initial treatment at a Level One Medical Bunker on the base, where they are reported to be in stable condition.

Evacuation arrangements are underway to transfer them to the UNIFIL Headquarters Referral Hospital for advanced care. The Ghana Armed Forces emphasized that the remaining troops are safe, many sheltered in underground bunkers, and assured the public of calm amid the fragile situation.

Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has lodged a formal protest at UN headquarters in New York over the attack on its peacekeepers. While the Ghana Armed Forces statement linked the incident to the broader IDF-Hezbollah clashes without assigning direct blame, various reports—including from Lebanese sources—have pointed to Israeli strikes as the cause, with UNIFIL investigating the origin of the fire.

This event underscores the risks to international peacekeeping efforts in southern Lebanon and the urgent need for de-escalation. Prayers and well-wishes go out to the injured soldiers for a swift and full recovery, and to their families and comrades serving far from home.
