Nigeria: NetNaija CEO Remanded Over Copyright Infringement and Movie Piracy
The CEO of NetNaija, one of Nigeria's most popular entertainment download platforms, is facing serious legal trouble over alleged copyright infringement. Emmanuel Analike was arraigned on Wednesday at the Federal High Court in Abuja by the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC).
He faces multiple counts including possession, reproduction, distribution, and making available infringing copies of movies, music, and other copyrighted works via the site—violations under Section 44(1)(a) of the Copyright Act 2022. Analike pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Justice Suleiman Liman presided over the proceedings and ordered that Analike be remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his bail application. His legal team, led by counsel Nnemeka Ejiofor, filed for bail, but the judge deferred the decision.
The bail ruling is now scheduled for Monday, March 9, 2026. This development has sparked widespread online discussions about the future of free downloads, online piracy crackdowns in Nigeria's creative industry, and access to affordable entertainment content.
