Murder of Ghanaian in South Africa Linked to Extortion, Not Xenophobia – SAPS

CAPE TOWN, South Africa — A sharp diplomatic and investigative disagreement has emerged between the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs following the fatal shooting of a 35-year-old Ghanaian national in the Western Cape.

The victim, identified as Mr. Kwabena Boagen, was shot and killed on Monday, June 29, 2026, at the busy Nyanga Terminus in Cape Town. According to local police reports, the incident occurred at approximately 3:45 p.m. in front of the NTG Hair Salon and Shoe Repairs, where unidentified gunmen opened fire on Boagen before fleeing the scene. Emergency Medical Services pronounced him dead at the spot.

Extortion vs. Xenophobia: The Conflicting Reports

The tragedy has sparked conflicting narratives regarding the motive behind the attack. In an official statement, SAPS Western Cape management confirmed the murder but explicitly linked it to localized criminal syndicates rather than targeted anti-immigrant sentiment.

“The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Western Cape confirms the murder of a Ghanaian national in Nyanga on Monday, 29 June 2026, in circumstances believed to be linked to the crime of extortion,” the police statement read.

This directly contradicts an earlier media release from Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which vehemently condemned the killing, attributing it to ongoing anti-immigrant demonstrations and xenophobic violence in the neighboring Khayelitsha area.

SAPS has flatly dismissed the geographic and situational claims made by the Ghanaian government, stating they have absolutely no official record of such an incident or any xenophobic killings taking place in Khayelitsha. While Boagen resided in Khayelitsha, authorities maintain that the crime occurred strictly at his workplace in Nyanga and bears the hallmarks of a protection racket hit.

Current Investigation Status

Detectives from the Nyanga police division have launched a full murder investigation to track down the fleeing suspects. A post-mortem examination is currently being conducted by South Africa’s Department of Health.

SAPS confirmed that investigators have established contact with a relative of the deceased to convey their condolences, even as diplomatic tensions simmer over the security of Ghanaian nationals living in the Western Cape.
