Abu Trica Arrested in U.S. for $8 Million AI-Driven Romance Scam
U.S. authorities have indicted a Ghanaian national, Frederick Kumi—also known as Emmanuel Kojo Baah Obeng or Abu Trica—for allegedly orchestrating an $8 million romance scam that preyed on elderly Americans.

According to U.S. officials, Kumi used AI-generated identities to create convincing online personas, build fake romantic relationships, and manipulate victims into sending money and valuables.

The elaborate scheme reportedly spanned several years, exploiting vulnerable individuals seeking companionship.

Kumi was arrested in Ghana on December 11, 2025, following a joint investigation involving the FBI and multiple Ghanaian law-enforcement agencies.
He has been charged with wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering, offences that each carry a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
U.S. officials say the coordinated efforts between the two countries underscore the growing international cooperation in tackling cyber-enabled financial crimes.
