Gov’t to Recruit 7,000 Teachers as Portal Opens This Month

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the Ministry of Education Ghana has secured approval from the Ministry of Finance Ghana to recruit at least 7,000 teachers from the 2023, 2024, and 2025 cohorts to address the country’s ongoing teacher shortage.

In a new development, the Minister revealed that the teacher recruitment portal will be opened this month, enabling qualified graduates to officially apply for posting. This follows mounting pressure from teacher trainees and student leaders demanding quicker employment opportunities after graduation.

Beyond basic education, government has also granted clearance for universities nationwide to recruit 1,200 additional lecturers to strengthen academic staffing and improve the quality of tertiary education delivery.

The latest intervention forms part of a broader strategy to fix imbalances in teacher distribution across the country. While some urban centres remain relatively saturated, many rural and underserved communities continue to experience critical shortages.

To address this, the government is also moving toward a decentralised recruitment system, where districts will play a more active role in identifying staffing gaps and recruiting teachers based on local needs.
