Ghana Announces Support Package for Citizens Evacuated From South Africa
The Government of Ghana has introduced a special assistance programme for citizens returning home after being evacuated from South Africa due to ongoing xenophobic violence.
Speaking on the development, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said the initiative is intended to help affected citizens rebuild their lives and settle comfortably after arriving in Ghana.
Under the arrangement, returnees will receive financial assistance through a “Welcome Home” package, support for transportation to their preferred destinations across the country, and additional funds to aid their resettlement process.
The minister also disclosed that mental health and counselling services will be made available to evacuees to help them recover from the emotional impact of the attacks and their sudden displacement.

As part of the reintegration effort, the government plans to place all returnees on a dedicated database that will connect them to employment opportunities and possible business support programmes.
The move follows increasing tensions and attacks against foreign nationals in some parts of South Africa, creating fear among many African migrants, including Ghanaians. Authorities say the latest intervention demonstrates the government’s commitment to protecting the welfare of its citizens both at home and abroad.
