Ghana Immigration Arrests 93 Nigerians in Accra Cybercrime Raid, Rescues 73 Victims

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has arrested 93 Nigerian nationals during a major intelligence-led operation targeting suspected cybercrime activities in Accra. The raid took place at Devtraco Estate, where immigration officers stormed six residential properties believed to be used as operational bases for internet fraud schemes.

The operation, spearheaded by Deputy Superintendent of Immigration Newman Akuffo, targeted six residences and highlights Ghana's intensifying efforts to dismantle cross-border online scam networks operating within its borders.

During the raid, authorities made a dramatic rescue of 73 victims who had reportedly endured torture and severe abuse while being coerced into participating in the fraudulent activities. Many of these individuals appear to have been trafficked or lured under false pretenses, a recurring pattern in West African cyber fraud operations often linked to "Yahoo boys" syndicates.

The swift intervention underscores the human cost behind these digital crimes and the role of enforcement agencies in protecting vulnerable people from exploitation.

Seized items from the scene paint a clear picture of sophisticated scam setups: authorities recovered counterfeit US dollars, fake gold bars (commonly used in advance-fee and investment frauds), 82 laptops, 57 mobile phones, 17 television sets, and assorted electronics essential for running online impersonation, romance scams, and other deceitful schemes.

Investigations continue as the arrested individuals await further legal proceedings, amid broader regional concerns over rising cyber threats and illegal migration tied to fraud rings.
