Gabon Suspends National Team, Drops Aubameyang After 2025 AFCON Exit
Gabon has taken drastic action following a poor outing at the Africa Cup of Nations, suspending the national team, dismissing the coaching crew, and removing several experienced players, including captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The measures were implemented after the Panthers ended the tournament at the bottom of their group, losing all three matches played in Morocco, one of which was a narrow 3–2 defeat to Ivory Coast.
Aubameyang, who is 36 and was sidelined for the final game due to injury, later addressed the situation on social media, insisting that the team’s struggles cannot be blamed solely on him. His comments came amid widespread debate over leadership and accountability within the squad.
In the past, African football authorities often disbanded national teams after disappointing tournament performances.
However, such decisions have become increasingly uncommon, largely due to FIFA’s strict opposition to government involvement in the management of football associations.
