Court Jails Female Officer for Failing to Pay Ex-Boyfriend Over Broken Marriage Promise
A law enforcement officer in Uganda has been jailed for six months after failing to pay compensation ordered by a court to her former boyfriend over a broken marriage promise.
A law enforcement officer stationed at Rubanda Town Council, Fortunate Kyarikunda, has been ordered to serve six months in civil prison by the Rukungiri Chief Magistrate’s Court for failing to settle a Shs14.1 million compensation owed to her former boyfriend after a breach of marriage promise.
The payment is due to Richard Tumwiine, a primary school teacher, who previously won a case in Kanungu District. Tumwiine argued in court that he spent more than Shs9.4 million supporting Kyarikunda’s studies at the Law Development Centre while the two were preparing for marriage.
According to court documents, Kyarikunda did not comply with the compensation order despite several rulings directing her to pay the amount. As a result, the court ordered her arrest and committal to Rukungiri Government Prison, where she will remain until the money is paid or the six-month sentence is completed.
