U.S. and Nigeria Asked Ghana to Join Operation Targeting ISIS in Sokoto — Ablakwa
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has revealed that the United States and Nigeria contacted Ghana over a planned military strike targeting ISIS-linked bases in Sokoto State.
Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has confirmed that both Nigeria and the United States reached out to Ghana to collaborate in military strikes carried out on Christmas Day against suspected ISIS targets in northwestern Nigeria.
The request formed part of a wider regional and international effort to combat the growing threat of extremist groups operating in the region.
According to Ablakwa, the strikes targeted camps believed to be linked to the Islamic State network operating in parts of Nigeria. The operation reportedly focused on areas within Sokoto State, where security agencies have raised concerns about the activities of terrorist groups and their affiliates.
The minister explained that Ghana’s involvement was within the framework of existing security and intelligence cooperation with international partners. He emphasized that any collaboration was conducted in accordance with Ghana’s national laws and sovereignty, while also contributing to broader efforts aimed at improving regional security and tackling terrorism in West Africa.
