Eduwatch Renews Call to Scrap Teacher Trainee Allowance in 2026 Budget

Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch) has once again urged the government to eliminate the Teacher Trainee Allowance, labeling the expenditure as inefficient and financially unsustainable.

This renewed appeal came in a statement released on Thursday, November 20, in response to the 2026 Budget presented by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson on November 13. The budget earmarks GH¢207.8 million for allowances to students enrolled in Colleges of Education.

Eduwatch contends that this substantial allocation would be more impactful if channeled into the Students’ Loan Scheme, thereby extending financial support to all tertiary students, including those training to become teachers.

The organization emphasized its consistent stance that abolishing the allowance and reinforcing the loan system would promote more inclusive and fair access to educational funding across the tertiary landscape.
