Education Minister Warns Headteachers Against Charging Unapproved Fees

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has cautioned headteachers nationwide against demanding or collecting unapproved fees as first-year students begin reporting to their respective schools.

He cautioned that “any school head who denies admission to a student placed in their institution or demands unapproved fees will face strict disciplinary action.”

Addressing the 32nd Annual Conference of Directors of Education in Sunyani, Mr. Iddrisu expressed deep concern over growing reports that some headteachers are hindering the enrollment of first-year students and illegally demanding money from parents and guardians.

He described such conduct as “completely unacceptable,” stressing that it undermines government’s mission to provide free and quality education for every Ghanaian child.

“Let me be clear — any student placed in a school through the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) must be admitted without any form of discrimination or demand for money beyond the officially approved fees,” the Minister emphasized.

Reiterating his Ministry’s dedication to discipline, transparency, and fairness, Mr. Iddrisu cautioned that any headteacher implicated in such misconduct will face appropriate administrative and legal sanctions.

He further urged Directors of Education nationwide to intensify monitoring and ensure strict compliance with Ministry directives to guarantee a smooth and equitable enrollment process for all new students.

“We will not compromise on access. Every child deserves their right to education—without barriers,” he concluded.
