The Constitutional Review Committee has recommended extending Ghana’s presidential term from the current four years to five years, as part of proposals aimed at strengthening governance and policy continuity.

The recommendation is intended to reduce the frequency of elections and allow governments more time to implement long-term development programmes.

According to the Committee, a five-year tenure could help ease the pressure associated with election cycles, improve planning, and enhance the effectiveness of public administration. The proposal is also expected to reduce the high cost of elections, which has been a recurring concern for successive governments.

The recommendation forms part of broader constitutional reform proposals that will be subjected to further consultations, public debate, and parliamentary consideration. Any change to the presidential term would ultimately require constitutional amendments in line with Ghana’s legal processes.
