Ghana’s Democracy Is Under Attack Under NDC Government – Bawumia
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has urged NPP communicators to remain bold in defending Ghana’s democratic values amid claims of rising political pressure.
The New Patriotic Party’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged party communicators to remain bold and committed to defending Ghana’s democratic values amid what he described as increasing political intimidation under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.
Bawumia made the call on Saturday, April 18, 2026, when he received a high-level delegation of NPP national, regional, and constituency executives from the Bono Region at his residence. The visit was to express gratitude for his backing following the recent arrest and detention of the party’s Sunyani East Constituency Communications Officer, Abubakar Yakubu, better known as Baba Amando.
He strongly criticised what he described as the misuse of state security apparatus to silence opposing voices and curtail freedom of speech.
“Ghana’s reputation as a democratic nation is facing serious threats,” Bawumia stated. “Free expression is increasingly being sidelined for narrow political interests.” He encouraged party communicators to remain courageous, outspoken, and unshaken by any form of intimidation.
“The fear tactics will not weaken our resolve,” he added, while advising members to base their criticisms on facts and continue holding the government to account.
The delegation was led by the NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, who thanked Dr. Bawumia for his solidarity and reassured him that party communicators would not be cowed but would stay resolute in their duties.
Meanwhile, the NPP has scheduled a protest march in Sunyani on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, themed “Yensuro Ahunahuna Demo” (We Are Not Afraid of Intimidation). The demonstration aims to voice strong opposition to what the party describes as deliberate, government-orchestrated efforts to undermine free speech and democratic governance.
