Ghana Needs 50,000 Teachers but Can Only Afford 7,000 — Iddrisu Speaks

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has justified the government’s decision to recruit 7,000 teachers, despite growing criticism that the number is far below what the country’s education sector requires.

Addressing the issue, he made it clear that the limitation is largely financial, explaining that although the demand for teachers across Ghana is significantly higher, the state simply cannot afford a larger intake at this time. He noted that in an ideal situation, the government would have recruited as many as 50,000 teachers to adequately support schools nationwide.

The Minister made these remarks at the launch of the 19th edition of the eLearning Africa Conference, where he responded to concerns about the scale of the ongoing recruitment.

According to him, the Ministry followed due process by securing approval from the Ministry of Finance (Ghana) before proceeding. He stressed that the recruitment was publicly advertised and handled in a transparent manner to give all qualified applicants a fair chance.

While acknowledging the concerns raised, Haruna Iddrisu insisted that the move remains a practical step under current economic conditions. He added that government is also prioritising long-term reforms, including the introduction of a digital education policy aimed at improving teaching and learning outcomes across the country.
