Cabinet Revokes E.I. 144 to Save Achimota Forest

The government of Ghana has officially restored full environmental protection to the Achimota Forest Reserve.

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, announced that the Cabinet has officially revoked the controversial Executive Instrument (E.I.) 144.

This key decision completely reverses a 2022 policy that had removed protected status from over 360 acres of the forest's southern section to return it to its pre-colonial owners. With this new directive, every single inch of the Achimota Forest is once again classified as a strictly protected national reserve.

Why This Decision is a Big Deal for Accra

When the forest's protected status was partially lifted in 2022, it sparked fierce national protests. Eco-advocates and urban planners warned that allowing developers to build on the land would destroy Accra’s environment.

As the only major green space left in the capital, the Achimota Forest plays a vital role in keeping Accra liveable:

  • Cleaner Air: It acts as the city's natural air filter, absorbing heavy carbon emissions and supplying fresh air.
  • Flood Prevention: The forest's soil and root systems absorb heavy rainwater, helping to prevent the devastating flash floods that regularly hit Accra.
  • A Natural Escape: It provides a crucial habitat for local wildlife and acts as a peaceful sanctuary away from the city's noise.

Minister Armah-Kofi Buah called the reserve the "last man standing" urban forest in the capital. He reiterated that President Mahama’s administration is fully committed to stopping any further encroachment on the land.

What Happens Next?

Now that the legal loophole has been closed, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Forestry Commission are stepping up security.

Moving forward, the focus will shift to reclaiming any encroached areas, planting more native trees, and dealing with waste issues in the reserve.

For Accra residents, this decision is a major victory—proving that public advocacy can successfully protect our shared natural heritage.
