Zimbabwean Footballer Divine Lunga Escapes Gun Attack in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG — Zimbabwean international football star Divine Lunga has narrowly escaped a terrifying ordeal after gunmen opened fire on his vehicle in South Africa. The harrowing incident, which occurred in the inner-city suburb of Hillbrow, Johannesburg, has sent shockwaves through both the Zimbabwean and South African football communities.

Lunga, a prominent defender for South African football giants Mamelodi Sundowns, was driving through the area with his younger brother when the sudden attack took place. Despite multiple shots being fired at the vehicle, miraculous intervention ensured that neither the footballer nor his brother sustained any physical injuries.

According to preliminary reports from the South African Police Service (SAPS), the terrifying shooting appears to be a case of mistaken identity.

"Initial investigations suggest that the suspects mistook the footballer's vehicle for that of an undercover police officer," stated police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko.

Following the gunfire, Lunga managed to navigate the vehicle away from immediate danger. Law enforcement officials quickly responded to the scene, ensuring the 21-cap Zimbabwe international was safely escorted back to his residence.

SAPS has officially opened an attempted murder case to investigate the shooting. While the motive points toward mistaken identity, no arrests have been made at this stage, and authorities are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the apprehension of the gunmen.

Lunga remains one of Zimbabwe's most successful football exports in recent years, having played a pivotal role in securing multiple league titles and an African Champions League trophy with Mamelodi Sundowns. Fans, teammates, and officials across the continent have expressed immense relief over his safety as police continue their manhunt.
