Ablakwa Calls for IELTS Exemption for Ghanaians Seeking UK Education and Jobs
Ghana's Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has made a request. He wants Ghanaian students and workers to be exempt from the IELTS. He wants them to avoid the related fees when applying to study or work in the United Kingdom.

The request was made during a high-level meeting with the British High Commissioner to Ghana, His Excellency Christian Rogg, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
The engagement formed part of broader discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between Ghana and the UK. Key areas highlighted for enhanced cooperation included security, trade, employment creation, healthcare, education, governance, and constitutional reforms. Both parties explored opportunities to deepen collaboration across these strategic sectors.
Mr Ablakwa argued that the IELTS requirement is unnecessary for Ghanaians, stressing that English has been the official language and primary medium of instruction in Ghanaian schools for decades. He emphasized that exempting Ghanaians from the test would ease barriers to international mobility, particularly for professionals.
The meeting also aligns with Ghana’s push to upgrade relations with the UK to a Strategic Partnership, with particular focus on safeguarding the welfare and working conditions of Ghanaian health professionals seeking employment abroad.
