South Korean Court Jails Former First Lady Kim Keon Hee for Bribery

A South Korean court has sentenced former First Lady Kim Keon Hee to one year and eight months in prison after finding her guilty of accepting bribes linked to the Unification Church.

The ruling was delivered by the Seoul Central District Court on Tuesday, marking one of the most high-profile corruption convictions involving a former first lady in the country’s history.

According to prosecutors, Kim Keon Hee received luxury items — including designer goods — from individuals associated with the Unification Church in exchange for influence during her husband’s presidency. The court ruled that the gifts constituted bribes and violated South Korea’s anti-corruption laws.

However, Kim was acquitted of several other charges, including allegations of stock price manipulation and violations of political funding laws, after the court said there was insufficient evidence to support those claims.

Prosecutors had initially pushed for a much stiffer sentence, arguing that the case undermined public trust in political leadership. The court ultimately imposed a lighter prison term, citing specific legal and evidentiary considerations.

The conviction adds to the legal troubles surrounding the former first family. Kim’s husband, former President Yoon Suk Yeol, has already been convicted and sentenced to prison in a separate case related to actions taken while in office.

The verdict has reignited public debate in South Korea over corruption, the influence of religious organizations in politics, and accountability for top government officials.

Legal analysts expect appeals from both prosecutors and the defense, meaning the case could continue through higher courts. For now, the ruling stands as a major moment in South Korea’s ongoing anti-corruption efforts.
