Police Arrests Kumasi’s Most Wanted Car-Snatching Gang

A major wave of car thefts and violent robberies gripping the Ashanti Region has finally been broken. In a high-stakes, intelligence-led operation, the Ashanti South Regional Police Command successfully dismantled a notorious criminal syndicate, arresting its alleged mastermind and neutralizing two dangerous accomplices.

The breakthrough came when police tracked down the gang’s hidden networks in Ahwiaa and Pankrono. The operation led to the arrest of William Opoku, widely known by his street moniker "Father Blessing." For months, Opoku and his crew had been the invisible hand behind a string of brazen car-snatchings, specifically targeting popular saloon cars like Toyota Corollas across busy hubs like Anloga Junction, Moro Market, and the Anwiankwanta–Asanso Road.

Upon his arrest, Opoku didn't just confess to the vehicle thefts—he also shed light on a deeply unsettling cold case. He admitted the gang’s involvement in a violent assault on a police officer at Kronum Brokutu back in July 2025, an attack where the syndicate managed to steal an official AK-47 assault rifle. Acting on his intel, investigators immediately raided a local mechanic shop, retrieving a stolen white Toyota Corolla right in the middle of being modified.

However, the streets didn't quiet down without a fight. Days later, a police backup team spotted three suspects riding an unregistered Honda PCX motorbike. When officers moved in, the criminals violently resisted. The rider rammed his bike directly into an officer and pulled a weapon, opening fire on the security personnel.

In the ensuing shootout, police returned fire, fatally wounding two suspects: Suley, famously known as "Shangu Spirit," and another accomplice known only as "Long Story." A third suspect, Bonkro (alias "Okoronko"), managed to slip away into the chaos and remains on the run. The two injured men were rushed to the Bekwai Municipal Hospital but were tragically pronounced dead on arrival.

With "Father Blessing" securely behind bars, the regional police are not letting up. The hunt is aggressively moving forward to track down "Okoronko" and the remaining syndicate members, alongside an urgent mission to recover the missing police AK-47 rifle before it can do any more harm.
