NSA Suspends Boxing After Bahubali’s Death

Boxing in Ghana has been temporarily suspended by the National Sports Authority (NSA) following the tragic deaths of two boxers within seven months. The most recent case involved Ghanaian fighter Ernest “Bahubali” Akushey, who collapsed during a bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena and later died from his injuries at the LEKMA Hospital.

Earlier this year, Nigerian boxer Gabriel Olanrewaju also lost his life in Accra after collapsing in the ring. These back-to-back incidents have raised serious concerns about safety standards in the sport and prompted the government to take decisive action.

The suspension is meant to allow for thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding these fatalities and to review existing medical and safety protocols in boxing. Reports have already highlighted lapses such as inadequate medical checks and organizational irregularities, which many believe contributed to the tragedies. Authorities say the ban will remain in place until reforms are implemented to safeguard fighters and restore confidence in the sport.
