NRSA Bans Toyota Voxy for Commercial Transport in Ghana Over Safety Concerns

Ghana’s National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has officially declared the use of the Toyota Voxy for commercial passenger transport illegal, citing significant safety concerns.

The decision follows a detailed technical assessment which found that the vehicle, originally designed for private and family use, is not suitable for the demands of commercial operations such as long-distance travel and heavy passenger loads. Authorities say the continued use of the Voxy as a public transport vehicle poses a serious threat to passenger safety across the country.

The NRSA further raised alarm over widespread modifications carried out on imported models, particularly the conversion from right-hand drive to left-hand drive by unapproved operators. These alterations, along with changes to suspension systems and tyres, have been found to weaken the structural integrity of the vehicle, increasing the risk of road accidents.

While the Toyota Voxy is not banned for private use, regulators warn that its use in commercial transport now constitutes a violation of safety standards, with enforcement measures expected to be intensified nationwide.
