NDC’s First Year Shows No Real Impact - Afenyo Markin

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has sharply criticised the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), arguing that the administration has failed to deliver meaningful results in its first year in office.

Speaking on the state of Ghana’s economy, Afenyo-Markin questioned whether the government has undertaken any major development projects or settled outstanding payments owed to contractors who borrowed from banks to execute public works.

“Last year, 2025, what did the government do? Did it pay contractors who had worked and borrowed from banks?” he asked.

The Minority Leader raised concerns about contractors who secured bank loans to complete government projects but are yet to receive payment. According to him, delays in settling these obligations could negatively affect businesses, banks, and the broader economy.

He also expressed skepticism about what he described as “paper growth,” suggesting that macroeconomic data alone is not enough to measure progress.

“If the economy is stagnating and we continue to talk about paper growth, I am interested in the cocoa farmer and the real impact on citizens,” he said.

Afenyo-Markin emphasised that economic indicators must translate into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary Ghanaians, especially farmers, small business owners, and workers.

“I am not here to talk about numbers that have no effect. If the numbers have made a positive impact, I will acknowledge and applaud them. But so far, one year in office, the government has not made any real impact,” he added.

His comments are likely to deepen the ongoing political debate over the NDC government’s economic management and development agenda. With rising concerns over inflation, contractor payments, and job creation, the opposition insists that measurable, people-centered outcomes should be the benchmark for assessing performance.

As Ghana moves further into the government’s tenure, the focus remains on whether policy decisions will translate into visible improvements for citizens across sectors — particularly agriculture, infrastructure, and small-scale enterprises.
