Julius Malema Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison Over 2018 Gun Incident
South African opposition leader Julius Malema has been sentenced to five years in prison, a dramatic ruling that could shake the country’s political landscape. The leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters was found guilty on firearm-related charges, with the sentence raising the possibility of him losing his seat in Parliament if it is upheld.

The conviction stems from a controversial 2018 incident at an EFF anniversary rally in the Eastern Cape, where Malema was captured in a viral video firing a semi-automatic rifle into the air.
The footage sparked widespread backlash and triggered legal action, leading to his conviction on multiple counts including unlawful possession of a firearm, discharging a weapon in public, and reckless endangerment. The case was pursued after a complaint by lobby group AfriForum, which has long been at odds with the outspoken politician.
Despite the ruling, Malema is not heading to prison immediately, as his legal team has confirmed plans to appeal the decision. The appeal process could delay or even overturn the sentence, setting the stage for a prolonged legal battle.
Reacting to the case previously, Malema maintained that the firearm was not his and described the situation as politically motivated, vowing that neither prison nor threats would silence his political movement.
