“I will approve the LGBTQ+ bill if Parliament passes it,” – Mahama.

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his firm stance on Ghana’s traditional family and moral values, stressing that gender is determined at birth and that the family remains the bedrock of the nation.

He made these remarks during a meeting with leaders of the Christian Council of Ghana, who paid a courtesy call on him in Accra on Tuesday, November 18.

Mahama noted that his position is fully aligned with that of the Christian Council, especially on issues relating to family, culture, and social values.

“A person’s gender is determined at birth, and the family is the foundation of our nation. That is our position,” he emphasized, adding that there is no ambiguity about where he stands on such matters.

Touching on the bill currently before Parliament, Mahama endorsed the Speaker of Parliament’s call for it to be re-laid and openly debated to accommodate any necessary amendments or clarifications.

He stressed that the final outcome must reflect the will of Parliament and the people of Ghana.

“If Parliament endorses the bill, votes on it, and passes it, and it comes to me as President, I will sign it,” he stated firmly.

The meeting highlighted continued collaboration between political leadership and religious bodies as Ghana navigates complex social issues.
