GTEC Suspends Accreditation of New General Nursing Programmes in Ghana
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has announced that it will stop accrediting new General Nursing programs. This affects both Diploma and Bachelor’s degree levels.
In a letter dated February 4 and signed by the Commission’s Director-General, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, and addressed to heads of all tertiary education institutions, GTEC said the decision is in line with its regulatory and accreditation mandate under the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023), and guided by national human resource development priorities.
The Commission emphasised that it will not receive, process, or consider any new applications for the accreditation of General Nursing programmes until further notice.
Institutions seeking to expand their health-related academic offerings have instead been encouraged to develop programmes in specialised and undersubscribed nursing areas.
These include, but are not limited to, Critical Care and Emergency Nursing, Paediatric Nursing, Oncology Nursing, Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, Geriatric Nursing, Nephrology Nursing, and Anaesthesia Nursing.
According to GTEC, prioritising these specialised fields will help address critical workforce gaps in the health sector and improve the likelihood of regulatory approval.
