GRNMA Threatens Fresh Strike Over Delayed Conditions of Service

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has issued a stern warning to the government and the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, threatening to resume their nationwide strike if all agreed conditions of service are not implemented by the end of July 2025. This follows the suspension of their strike action earlier in June, which was initiated due to long-standing delays in the implementation of their revised conditions. GRNMA’s leadership has expressed disappointment over the government's slow pace, especially after a scheduled meeting with the Health Committee on June 26 was postponed to July 10 without adequate notice.

According to GRNMA President Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo and 1st Vice President Samuel Alagkora Akolgo, the association is no longer willing to tolerate what it describes as "bad faith" engagements. The association insists that a clear and time-bound roadmap, signed off by the government, must be presented at the rescheduled meeting. The roadmap should include specific dates for implementing all four key items agreed upon in the collective bargaining agreement. GRNMA believes this is the only way to restore trust and avoid a return to industrial action, which severely disrupted healthcare delivery during the initial strike.

The nurses and midwives’ union maintain that their patience is wearing thin and that they are prepared to take action if their demands are not met within the new timeline. As frontline health professionals, they argue that improved working conditions are essential not just for their welfare, but for the overall effectiveness of the country’s healthcare system. The government now faces mounting pressure to meet its commitments or risk another round of strikes that could cripple the health sector and undermine public trust.
