Ghana Catholic Bishops Urge Mahama to Declare State of Emergency on Galamsey

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has called on President John Mahama to immediately declare a state of emergency on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey. The Bishops cautioned that any further delay in tackling the menace would amount to a betrayal of the nation and its people.

According to the Conference, galamsey has now reached crisis levels, wreaking havoc on the environment, endangering public health, and eroding governance structures. The bishops noted that the unchecked destruction of forests, rivers, and farmlands continues to jeopardize livelihoods and poses long-term risks to national development.

They further emphasized that the situation demands urgent, decisive, and coordinated action from government and stakeholders to safeguard the nation’s natural resources and protect communities that depend on them.
