The arrest followed an intelligence-led operation conducted by the Ashanti South Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) under the leadership of ASP Princeton Peasah Darkwa, after the officer allegedly attempted to sell weapons to an undercover police operative.

According to a situational report from the PID, the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to dismantle networks involved in supplying firearms to criminal elements in Obuasi and surrounding communities.

Preliminary intelligence had linked the military officer to the illicit distribution of weapons, prompting police to deploy undercover operatives to engage him on December 15, 2025. During the engagement, the suspect reportedly arrived in a military vehicle with registration number 54 GA 92 and indicated his ability to supply M16 rifles, G3 rifles, pistols, and other firearms. He allegedly quoted GH¢80,000 for an M16 rifle.

On December 16, 2025, the suspect reportedly contacted the undercover agent to confirm that the weapons were ready for collection. He later met the agent at the Bekwai Shell Filling Station, where he was arrested in the process of handing over the firearms.

Items retrieved at the time of arrest included a TMM 22 assault rifle loaded with 99 rounds of ammunition and two 12-round magazines, as well as an Ash Taurus GX2 pistol with 100 rounds of ammunition and three 12-round magazines.

During interrogation, the suspect allegedly admitted to selling weapons to individuals in and around Obuasi. He is currently in police custody pending further investigations and formal notification to his military superiors, while efforts are ongoing to arrest his accomplices.
