COCOBOD to Offer Free Tertiary Education for Children of Cocoa Farmers

The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has announced plans to provide free tertiary education for children of cocoa farmers, a move aimed at supporting farming families and strengthening Ghana’s cocoa sector.

Speaking during an engagement with cocoa farmers from the Abuakwa North and Fanteakwa South districts in the Eastern Region, COCOBOD Board Chairman Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo disclosed that a committee has been established to review and implement the expanded scholarship scheme.

According to him, the initiative follows a government directive to ensure that scholarship opportunities for children of cocoa farmers are extended beyond the basic and secondary levels to include tertiary education.

“The government has directed us to ensure that scholarships for children of cocoa farmers extend to the tertiary level. A committee has been set up to oversee this, and we expect to bring its recommendations for implementation soon,” Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo said.

He further revealed that COCOBOD is also rolling out measures to improve farmers’ productivity and safety in cocoa-growing communities. These include the distribution of about 2,700 motorized spraying machines and 89,000 personal protective equipment (PPE) kits to cocoa farmers across the country.

Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo noted that the equipment will help farmers carry out spraying activities more efficiently while protecting them from health risks associated with farm chemicals.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts by COCOBOD and the government to improve the welfare of cocoa farmers and ensure sustainable growth in Ghana’s cocoa industry.
