COCOBOD Denies GH¢12 Million Black Stars Sponsorship Claims
Ghana's cocoa regulator dismisses claims of diverting farmer funds to national football team amid sector scrutiny.
The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has firmly rejected viral claims that it donated or sponsored GH¢12 million to Ghana's national football team, the Black Stars.
In an official public statement issued today (February 26, 2026), COCOBOD described the allegations — which suggested funds earmarked for cocoa farmers were diverted to football support — as completely false, misleading, and baseless.
Key points from the Board's notice:
- COCOBOD has not sponsored the Black Stars in any capacity.
- No resources intended for cocoa farmer payments or welfare have been redirected to the national team.
- "At no point has COCOBOD diverted funds meant for farmer payments to support the Black Stars," the statement stressed.
The denial follows recent public speculation and social media buzz, including questions from politicians like the MP for Old Tafo, amid ongoing discussions about cocoa sector challenges such as farmer payments and sector funding.
COCOBOD reiterated its core focus: safeguarding the welfare of Ghana's cocoa farmers through timely payments, input supplies, extension services, and long-term investments in the industry.
The Board called on the public, farmers, and stakeholders to disregard the rumors and verify information only through official COCOBOD channels.

This comes at a time of increased scrutiny on national resource use, as Ghana pushes toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and finals preparations.
