Chiefs and People of Tarkwa, Huni Appeal to Mahama to Renew GoldFields Mining Agreement

The chiefs and people of Tarkwa and Huni in the Western Region have appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to renew the mining agreement between the Government of Ghana and Gold Fields Ghana Limited when it expires in 2027.

According to the traditional leaders, the mining company has played a vital role in the socio-economic development of their communities over the years through infrastructure projects, employment opportunities, educational support, and other corporate social responsibility initiatives.

Mining activities in Tarkwa date back to 1874 when commercial underground mining was introduced by the British Colonial Government. Gold Fields has managed the Tarkwa mines since 1993 and has since become one of the largest contributors to the local economy.

The chiefs argue that the company's continued presence is essential for sustaining development and livelihoods in the area, urging the government to consider the positive impact of its operations as discussions about the future of the mining lease approach.
