Benin Coup: Soldiers Announce the Dissolution of the Government

Soldiers in Benin made a dramatic appearance on the country’s state television on Sunday, announcing that they had taken control of the government.

The group declared the dissolution of all state institutions and revealed that they were forming a new ruling body known as the Military Committee for Refoundation.

They also named Lieutenant-Colonel Pascal Tigri as the new head of state and ordered the closure of the nation’s borders as part of their takeover measures.

The sudden announcement has created widespread uncertainty, as the whereabouts of President Patrice Talon remain unknown. Reports of gunfire near the presidential residence and warnings issued by foreign missions have heightened concerns about instability.

Although the soldiers claim full control, international observers and citizens await clearer details as the situation continues to develop.
