Nigerian University Teachers Threaten Indefinite Strike Over 15 Years of Same Salary

Lecturers at Nigeria’s public universities say they will shut down all institutions indefinitely beginning Friday.

The announcement was made on Twitter for the indefinite strike.

In a statement posted on X, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) warned that the closure will proceed if the government fails to meet its key demands, which include fair remuneration and better working conditions to curb the ongoing exodus of academic talent.

ASUU recently rejected the government’s proposed 35% salary increase, insisting that it does not adequately address long-standing welfare issues.

The union had earlier suspended a warning strike in October and issued a one-month ultimatum for the government to act on concerns over staff welfare and the deteriorating teaching and learning environment.
