“Some People Left the Church Because I am a Lesbian Bishop" – Archbishop of Wales

The Archbishop of Wales, the Most Rev. Cherry Vann, has disclosed that some members of the Church in Wales have left the church following her appointment because she is a gay woman.

Speaking in recent interviews, Archbishop Vann acknowledged that while many people have welcomed her leadership, others have struggled with her sexuality and gender, leading them to distance themselves from the church. She described the reaction as painful but said it reflects long-standing tensions within parts of the Anglican community over issues of inclusion and leadership.

Archbishop Vann, who made history as the first woman and the first openly gay archbishop in the Anglican Communion, said she takes the departures seriously but remains committed to fostering unity and dialogue.

She emphasized that the church must continue to be a place of compassion, respect, and understanding, even amid deep disagreements. Her comments have reignited wider debate within global Anglicanism, with supporters praising her openness and critics arguing that her appointment represents a departure from traditional doctrine.
